Rewrite-a-riffic

It’s been about 6 months since any major rewrite was undertaken on the libretto. Now that we’ve had our first production meeting (back in May, just before semester’s end) and had some insightful input from director, Monica Bell, I’ve taken a crack at those libretto updates and also one of the songs (Without Us–the riff on modern artists sung by “gangs” representing the various geniuses and styles) that’s been a little on the craptastic side (but which I wasn’t in a place mentally to fix until very recently–in the song vs. writer battle the first time, the song, I think, might have kicked my patootey).

New lyrics:

PICASSOS

ANY FOOL CAN OUTLINE
TWO EYES AND A NOSE.
IT TAKES PABLO TO FRACTURE
AND TRIPLE THE POSE.

WITHOUT ME TO SHOW YOU
THAT FRUIT IS A SQUARE,
YOUR ART WILL FALL FLAT
ON ITS DERRIERE.

O’KEEFFES

WITHOUT ME TO BE A GAZELLE AMONG APES,
YOUR EGOS WOULD CRUSH ALL THE LUSCIOUS LANDSCAPES.
WITHOUT ME TO SELL THE SEX OF A FLOWER,
YOU’D FORGET THAT A GIRL’S KITTY HAS POWER.

Also, take note, CCU actors: “Toni-O” is no longer androgynous, but more of a street-tough with a heart of gold. So adjust your auditions and dreams for the future accordingly.

  1. So that leaves us with “Toni-O” as a girl or guy street-tough? Just curious. I’ve loved reading the script and getting to know the music!

  2. darylfazio Says:

Yeah, I guess that was unclear, wasn’t it? Toni-O will be a tough male character, to make him a strong contrast to Kitty. Though his sexuality may be questionable by the end of the show.
